I gave Zen Barre SPARK a try today and I'm glad I did. As soon as Jonelle explained how it worked, I realized I was really going to like the way the class segments were set up. You do everything twice, which is great on so many levels - if it's a move you are not so familiar with you can use the first time through to find your balance and let your body get used to the motion, and the second time through you can start to really challenge yourself and experiment with the more difficult modifications (or not, LOL). If it's a move you already know, you can go for the harder mods right away, knowing that if you tire out your muscles, you can always dial it down a notch on the second set. Also it's mentally much easier to know you only have to do each sequence twice - and then you are going to switch to a whole other set of exercises that target different muscle groups. So you are going to work hard the entire time, but you are never going to dwell on any particular muscle movement for long enough to overwork it. I was also impressed at how a 30-minute class can incorporate both the Yin and the Yang - some segments we moved quickly and I was sweating and my heart rate was up - punctuated by the classic yoga balancing poses such as Tree, where mental focus and steady breath is key. -Laura M
